Over the years I have been experimenting with engraving through chrome without any peeling. I have been somewhat successful until recently when I developed a new engraver that has been 99% successful in engraving through chrome with no peeling of the chrome. Out of more then a dozen pieces I have had engraved recently only one piece had minor peeling which I was able to fix. What this means is that you no longer will need to go through the hassle of going to the chrome shop and getting everything stripped and polished, sending it to me for engraving and then going to the chrome shop again for plating. If you choose to go this way with your engraving project it will save you a lot of time and a lot of money. On average the plating cost more then the engraving. I black fill the engraving for a very good reason, on the steel parts you have to cover the steel or it will rust, on the metal parts it will help to keep the elements from getting between the chrome and the metal. Plus it looks cool.
Since this is a new technique I can not guarantee that your parts will not peel.
I haven't had any problems engraving genuine Harley parts, and I haven't had the opportunity to engrave a lot of other manufactures parts to see what they will do but I have engraved quite a few pieces and been very successful engraving them as well.
